What a class covers

Four things we practice, in this order

Every class works on the same four ideas. They get faster and more detailed as you move from Fundamentals to Intermediate.

  • Distance

Where you stand, how far a partner's reach is, and how to keep the space or close it.

  • Awareness

Where the exits are, who is beside you and how to notice a room before you settle into it.

  • A firm voice

Saying stop and step back, loudly and clearly, as a drill you rehearse with a partner.

  • Pads and partners

Strikes on pads and shields, and escapes from grabs and holds, at a pace you and your partner set.

A note for veterans and service members

Train with people who understand your schedule

Wardell served in the Army, and many members of the studio have served or are serving. If that matters to you, say so at the door and we will introduce you around.

What we can work around

  • Shift work and orders change. Ask us about pausing a membership.

  • Early classes at 6 a.m. and noon classes fit around a duty day.

  • Nothing here is a requirement: everyone starts in Fundamentals.

Instructors

Who is on the floor

Two instructors share the week. Wardell teaches most evening classes and Malini teaches the women's class.

  • Wardell Venable, owner and head instructor, in a navy training uniform holding two pads

    Wardell Venable

    Owner and head instructor

Wardell served in the Army and opened Maai after he left. He teaches Fundamentals, Intermediate and open training, and he is glad to talk about his own training at the door.

  • Malini Viswanathan, instructor, in a black top and shorts leaning on a stack of mats

    Malini Viswanathan

    Instructor, women's class and conditioning

Malini teaches the women's class and the conditioning classes. She also covers the noon Fundamentals class on Wednesday, and she is often the first person a new student meets.

Questions

Before your first class

How old do I have to be?

Classes are for adults, ages 18 and up. Everyone starts in Fundamentals, whether you are 20 or 60.

Can I watch a class first?

Yes. Sit on the bench by the door and watch any class, or come to a Fundamentals class and try it.

What do I wear to the first class?

A plain t-shirt and loose, stretchy trousers or shorts, and clean bare feet. Take off jewelry and tie hair back. We lend pads and gloves for your first classes.

What is a class like?

We warm up, then work on one idea at a time: distance, awareness, a firm voice and partner drills on pads. Partners set the pace together, and an instructor is on the floor the whole time.

Do I need to be fit?

No. All fitness levels start here, and an instructor shows you how to scale every drill. The conditioning class is built to be a workout that is also a class.

Do you use belts?

No. Classes are Fundamentals, Intermediate, conditioning and open training. An instructor tells you when you are ready to join Intermediate.
